4 Fun Facts About Windows That You May Not Know

We take windows for granted. We use them every day to get some fresh air or even just brighten up our rooms. But there’s more to windows than meets the eye. Today, we discuss four fun facts about windows. 4 Fun Facts About Windows That You May Not Know

The White House Has a Total of 147 Windows

To give you a sense of scale, the average household has about eight windows. Imagine how much work it takes to keep those windows clean! But, alas, the building with the most number of windows goes to the Burj Khalifa, with a whopping 24,000 windows. It takes a team of 36 window cleaners and 3 months to clean all windows top-to-bottom, using state-of-the-art cranes and special suits.

Grilles Were a Necessity

You’re probably more familiar with removable grilles, but in the past, they were absolutely needed. During the Renaissance period, glassmaking technology was limited to manufacturing glass panels several inches across. The earliest examples of glass windows featured several glass panels held together by what we know today as grilles. Today, you can have replacement windows with glass panels of virtually any size; grilles serve a more decorative function.

The Origin of the Word “Fenestration”

You may have heard of the word “fenestration” in reference to windows and doors. It came from the Latin word fenestra, which translates as window. The term “fenestration” persists as a general term for windows, doors and skylights. In fact, there is an organization called the National Fenestration Rating Council® (NFRC), which is responsible for the energy performance labels that are affixed to new doors and windows.

Invisible Insulation

You may have been wondering how “insulated glass” works without visible insulation. Unlike window frames and sashes, conventional insulation can’t be inserted into glass, which happens to be a naturally conductive material. The solution is an assembly of two glass panels, separated by insulated spacers. The airspace between glass panels dramatically reduces conductivity, which slows down heat transfer between its indoor and outdoor sides. This has proven to be so effective that Renewal by Andersen® has made it a standard component of our replacement windows.

"I just bought my first house. My patio sliding door was rotten. So, I needed it to replace it. Renewal by Anderson of Southern Missouri listened to what I wanted and delivered it. They did a fantastic job of installing and cleaning up afterwards. They did it even in freezing rain that day I was scheduled to have it replaced. They even had a follow-up to check things out and do the touch ups. I'm amazed at there work. Great job Renewal by Anderson."

"On Feb 1,2024 my husband and I selected Renewel by Andersen for windows for our entire house. It made our house more beautiful with the picture windows. Made the outside more attractive, and on the inside. We did 14 windows. We had 4 men come to do the job in 1 day And they were very friendly, efficient, fast and cleaned up inside and outside perfectly. And most importantly we noticed the heating furnace runs less, therefore saving us money on our gas bill. We live in SW Missouri. We recommend anyone who wants to replace windows in their home to pick Renewal by Andersen. Sincerely, Darius and Nancy Durman"
